The fig is a much-celebrated fruit, both for its more prosaic but nonetheless highly important physical characteristics, and for its symbolism. In general, the fruit is rich in fiber, vitamin B6 and potassium, to name but a few of its nutrients.

Its symbolic connotations, however, have a slightly more controversial aspect. The shape of this fruit recalls the shape of the uterus and was thus used in Renaissance paintings to denote the sensual and carnal.
