Why We Use Soy Wax
And why you should choose Selana Ways
From the very first moment we set out to officially create Selana Ways candles, we immediately chose to use sustainable, clean resources for any and every point of the production process we could.
This is why Sophie, the creator of Selana Ways, insisted from the very beginning that we use the more expensive soy wax. For Sophie, it was never a question of using cheaper, more harmful for humans and their environment (which is often wrongly thought of as two separate entities) substances, as opposed to more costly but clean substances made from renewable resources.
This is why Selana Ways has always used the excellent medium for carrying scents; soy wax. Soy wax is a vegetable wax produced by soybeans. We would expect nothing less from ourselves if we used something that is not organic especially since we have chosen Selana as the representative of our work.
Indeed, the process which creates soy wax from soybeans is quite straightforward; the oil derived from the rolling of cleaned, cracked, and de-hulled soybeans into flakes becomes solid at room temperature after hydrogenated, making it ideal for its use in candle making. Hydrogenation is a chemical reaction; it is a process by which a liquid, unsaturated fat is turned into a solid fat by adding hydrogen. This treatment is ideal for the use of the oil produced by soybeans, so that nothing is wasted from the processing of the beans themselves.
By contrast, paraffin wax, the most common wax used for candle making, is derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil. As everyone knows, these substances come from a non-renewable resource, unlike soybeans. What is more, apart from soy wax being made from environmentally friendly and, most importantly, renewable sources, it also burns slower than paraffin wax.
This means that our candles last longer and burn cleaner than candles made from paraffin wax. Even though paraffin is cheaper and more accessible, we have found that soy wax works best with the scents we wish to work with while at the same time producing an environmentally cleaner product. And importantly for our purposes of encouraging others to instill their very own signature scent into their space, soy wax is a better, if not excellent carrier of scents.
In practice, this means that no additional chemicals are required to enhance our aromas; indeed, the scents we use do not lose any of their potency when translated into the soy wax, and so our patrons get optimal use out of our product which provides them with a true-to-scent fragrance throw off while burning. We also use 100% cotton wicks in our efforts to reduce our imprint on the environment.
And although all candles produce soot when burning, our soy wax candles coupled with our cotton wicks ensure a significant reduction in soot production both upon burning and putting out.
